technical investment case studies for nature based solutions
turning intelligence into investment
we provide the evidence to support natural flood management investment, infrastructure resilience, biodiversity uplift, and full stack natural capital valuations
Here you will find our portfolio of Investment Scenarios that show how we use our Terrain Foundation(TM) Model, Infrastructure Impact Atlas and Investment Optimiser on our Nature Intelligence Platform(TM) to turn intelligence in to finance grade investable propositions.
The studies cover critical assets from UK Rail Network, Water Utilities plants, to a transcontinental shipping artery.
These provide important lessons for National Significant Infrastructure projects here in the UK and Internationally.
You will also find an investment scenario that looks at the opportunity to build back better for storm reconstruction in South East Asia and another that focusses on tropical rain forest nature recovery and sustainable development in Borneo.
What they share is a common method, each begins with a governed Terrain Foundation, models the catchment hydrology before considering exposed assets at risk, and ends with a prioritised costed investment program that a board or a funder can act on.
The natural capital studies in addition, incorporate our own AI enabled habitat mapping and monitoring. By including ground truth and real time monitoring data we are able to estimate carbon sequestration, habitat condition, water quality and count species and account for the impacts of sustainable/unsustainable land management. This capability shows how we can determine a comprehensive natural capital value of a landscape - an approach we call the full ecosystem stack.
The Borneo scenario show cases our approach that turns the complex of nature valuation into a simple to understand and transparent investment by producing a Nature Credit mechanism.
Each study is available as a downloadable document. Each type of investment scenario case can act as a start point and help turn your own case within a matter of weeks.
I hope you find the investment scenarios series of interest and it helps spark thoughts on how we can help you channel investment into nature based solutions at scale - we feel that behind the slogans of "Nature as Infrastructure" or "Nature as a New Asset Class" that there is a need for practical, evidence based implementation, that is exactly our focus.
Once you have read the scenarios, we would love to hear from you and if you want to get into more detail then please order an accelerated investment case workshop, so we can get to work in achieving your goal, and also help move towards our own goal to shift £1 billion into nature based solutions.
Best wishes

NFM Investment - infrastructure
owners
We have analysed a water utility company’s infrastructure assets for every one of the catchments across the whole of the South West England so we could show where the company should invest first - and which combination of Natural Flood Management interventions will deliver the greatest resilience value? Example of a water utility.
02
delivering flood resilience as a service
We show how an infrastructure owner could purchase a defined, monitored flood-resilience outcome - rather than commissioning and managing individual Natural Flood Management schemes? We provide the verification intelligence to make this a reality. Example of regional approach with multiple customers.
03
Protect a national infrastructure network
06
creating a nature credit for borneo
AI habitat classification model for Central Borneo. Here we developed a novel algorithm to remove persistent cloud cover over rainforest from images. Habitat classification and continuous monitoring provides evidence of habitat change and shows development of palm oil plantations. The data is used to prototype how a Nature Credit could be identified but one that encompasses uplift in all 7 domains. It using Natural Capital Accounting to quantify net gain and is used as the basis to quantify Nature Credit.
APPLICATIONS
04 - sectors
Our approach can support organisations responsible for:
water utilities
Protect treatment works, pumping stations and wastewater infrastructure while identifying catchment-scale opportunities that complement conventional engineering.
rail
Reduce flood disruption through catchment-scale resilience planning that protects rail corridors, bridges and operational assets.
highways
Understand upstream flood drivers and prioritise interventions that reduce network disruption.
energy and power grid
Improve resilience of substations, transmission corridors, renewable energy assets and associated infrastructure.
nsip owners and developers
For nationally significant (critical) infrastructure we evidence flood risk, drainage and nature-based mitigation for Development Consent Order applications and deliver catchment-scale resilience across the asset lifecycle.
data centres
Quantify fluvial and surface water exposure to campuses, substations and access routes, and identify upstream measures that protect uptime.
logistics, distribution and warehouses
Protect distribution hubs, yards and access corridors from disruption, and support site selection and capital planning.
local authorities
Support Local Flood Risk Management Strategies, capital investment planning and partnership funding.
Nature and environmental organisations
Prioritise projects that maximise both flood resilience and wider environmental benefits including biodiversity net gain, carbon removal and habitat development & restoration.
energy and power grid
Improve resilience of substations, transmission corridors, renewable energy assets and associated infrastructure.

high resolution terrain and hydrology model showing the flow accumulation and prioritised location for flood water storage in the landscape
technical capabality
05 - capability
Our Nature Intelligence Platform combines:
high resolution lidar terrain modelling
river network analysis
infrastructure intelligence
flood HAZARD ASSESSSMENT
economic prioritisation
natural flood management investment optimisation
The result is a transparent, evidence-based workflow capable of supporting decisions from individual catchments through to regional investment programmes.

06 - next step
The best way to understand our approach is through a real project.
We provide detailed technical and economic case studies that demonstrate how Nature Equity applies terrain intelligence, hydrological modelling and investment optimisation to solve real infrastructure challenges.
Our case studies include methodology, workflow, technical outputs and investment insights. So that you can, with confidence identify, what flood prevention measures are best to protect your assets and how much it will cost and what is economic benefit.
from case styudy to rapid catchment assessment
07 - then
Every organisation has unique assets, catchments and investment priorities.
Following an initial discussion, we can undertake a Rapid Catchment Assessment to demonstrate how our methodology applies to your organisation.
A TYPICAL RAPID CATCHMENT ASSESSMENT CAN INCLUDE
-
Terrain Foundation creation
-
Catchment hydrology analysis
-
Infrastructure Impact Atlas
-
Natural Flood Management opportunity mapping
-
Prioritised intervention portfolio
-
Executive report and technical outputs
The objective is to provide a practical evidence base that enables organisations to evaluate future investment with confidence before committing to larger programmes.

before the next storm!
let's build more resilient infrastructure
Nature-based solutions have enormous potential — but only when they are planned with robust evidence.
Nature Equity provides the terrain intelligence, hydrological understanding and investment analysis needed to turn catchment data into practical, prioritised programmes that deliver measurable resilience.
Whether your organisation is beginning its Natural Flood Management journey or seeking to optimise an existing programme, we would welcome the opportunity to discuss how our platform can support your objectives.
