Satellites now observe the Earth repeatedly and at extraordinary scale. LiDAR reveals the structure of terrain and vegetation. New generations of sensors can detect characteristics ranging from vegetation condition and water to methane emissions from space. At the same time, AI can be trained to recognise landscapes, habitats and patterns of environmental change across millions of observations.
Radar imaging is enabling us to make breakthroughs in how we understand the impact of storms and our models are developed to learn patterns so we are better prepared for the next one.
Together, these advances make something new possible: large-scale Terrain and Habitat Foundation Models that learn from the landscape and combine multiple sources of evidence into a coherent picture of how land functions and changes and understand how to adapt quickly to climate risks.

Our AI Habitat Mapper transforms satellite imagery into consistent, landscape-scale habitat information giving customers a faster way to understand what habitats are present, where they are changing and where further investigation is most valuable.
It complements authoritative national datasets rather than replacing them. In the UK, it can help fill important gaps including mapping linear and fragmented features such as hedgerows, field boundaries, riparian corridors and small habitat patches that may be poorly represented in conventional datasets. This creates a richer evidence base for biodiversity assessment, Biodiversity Net Gain, natural capital planning and landscape investment.
Satellite imagery is continually refreshed, our AI Habitat Mapper can also look backwards and forwards in time. Customers can identify habitat loss, restoration, land-use change and emerging pressures, establish a baseline and then monitor whether interventions are delivering the expected results.
For international projects, the value can be even greater. Where national habitat datasets are incomplete, inconsistent or simply unavailable, satellite imagery provides a common evidence source. We can rapidly create a bespoke habitat baseline across an estate, catchment, landscape or project area without waiting for comprehensive national mapping to exist.
The same capability can be trained for specific customer needs from locating potential restoration corridors to identifying particular habitat characteristics. Combined with our wider evidence stack, it also helps target field surveys towards the places where additional evidence matters most, reducing time spent surveying areas that can already be characterised with confidence.

02 cloud busting application

Cloud cover is one of the biggest practical limitations of earth observation, particularly in tropical and high-rainfall environments. A satellite may pass over a project frequently, but persistent cloud can leave critical areas hidden for weeks or months.
Our AI Cloud Busting capability is designed to overcome that constraint. It reconstructs usable landscape information from multiple observations, helping us build a more complete picture of areas repeatedly obscured by cloud.
In addition to this AI capability we also use Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) alongside optical satellite imagery. Unlike conventional optical sensors, radar signals can penetrate cloud and operate day or night. This makes SAR particularly valuable for detecting forest loss and disturbance, flooding, changes in vegetation structure, surface moisture and major land-cover change when cloud prevents a clear optical view.
But radar does not simply produce a cloud-free photograph. It measures how radar signals interact with the surface, creating information that requires specialist interpretation. It can be affected by terrain and vegetation structure, and it does not provide the same spectral information that optical imagery gives us for distinguishing vegetation and habitat characteristics.
For our rainforest work, this is where our AI Cloud Busting application that combines our AI & SAR processing capability means we can maintain a much clearer view of forest condition, land-cover change, disturbance and restoration activity in places where relying on a single clear satellite image simply does not work. Rather than relying on a single sensor, we combine observations through time with optical and radar evidence to build a more complete and continuous understanding of the landscape.
For customers, the benefit is straightforward: fewer gaps in the evidence and greater confidence that important changes are not being missed. This supports project baselining, monitoring and verification, conservation programmes, natural capital investment and long-term reporting.
It is particularly valuable for international nature projects, where regular field inspection can be expensive and national monitoring infrastructure may be limited.
Instead of asking “Do we have a clear image?”, we can focus on the more useful question: “What is changing on the ground?”

Nature Equity combines different forms of Earth observation because no single dataset tells the whole story. We bring them together to create a richer, more useful view of the landscape.
Sentinel satellite imagery provides frequent, large-area observations of the Earth’s surface. We use it to understand vegetation, habitat and land-cover patterns and, crucially, how they change through time. This makes it particularly valuable for baseline mapping, change detection and ongoing monitoring.
LiDAR, especially high resolution aerial LiDAR provides highly detailed information about the shape and structure of the land. It allows us to see features that conventional maps can miss from subtle changes in terrain and drainage pathways to vegetation structure. We use it to improve understanding of flood risk, water movement, habitat structure and opportunities for nature-based interventions. We believe Terrain is the first layer of intelligence, that gives you situation awareness.
Other satellite and Earth observation datasets add further evidence where greater detail, different sensing capabilities or more frequent observations are required. Depending on the project, these can help reveal vegetation condition, soil and moisture patterns, forestry change, surface water and other characteristics of the landscape.
The real advantage is not access to satellite data, much of that data already exists. The value comes from turning multiple sources into decision-ready evidence. The map is not the product. The decision it enables is.
