My last seven years working with natural capital has taught me that we continue to grossly undervalue our landscapes and the natural world.  

 

Focusing on just one aspect such as carbon credits or even habitats completely misses the big picture. At Nature Equity, we paint on a bigger canvas.  The natural environment is extraordinarily complex. Water, soils, habitats, land use, topography, climate, agriculture, and our built infrastructure all interact continuously - yet most environmental analysis still treats them as separate datasets and separate problems.

 

Nature Equity's Terrain Foundation Model (TFM) changes that.

It creates a consistent, governed and connected digital representation of the natural environment that can be used by our applications, analytical models and AI systems to understand not simply what is where, but increasingly how places work, how they are connected, what could change and where intervention creates the greatest value.

It is the foundation beneath Nature Equity’s Nature Intelligence Platform.

   From terrain → understanding → intervention → investment.

 

So to represent nature in all its glory we decided to build a new foundation from the ground up, and we have created the Terrain Foundation Model which is at the heart of our Nature Intelligence Platform - seven rings but one model to bind them all.

01 - new approach

beyond the gis stack

Traditional environmental analysis starts with maps.

Elevation. Rivers. Flood Risk. Soils. Habitats. Land Use. Crops. Infrastructure. Protected areas.

 

Each layer may be valuable, but individually they tell only part of the story.

 

A conventional GIS Stack can tell us that two things occupy the same location. It does not inherently understand the relationship between them. 

 

Using GIS to build an ecosystem stack is like trying to build a jig saw puzzle from different sized sets, each with different levels of detail.

Zoom in and you lose the relationship and zoom out you lose the detail

Our Terrain Foundation Model is designed to move beyond these limitations 

Instead of continually assembling disconnected layers for individual projects, we ingest authoritative environmental datasets into a controlled and repeatable data architecture.​​

  • The result is not another map .

  • It is an environmental model of place. 

  • It shows the relationships through all the data 

  • It becomes nature's operating system that can be interpreted by AI

A river is not simply a blue line

 A river belongs to a catchment.

 

  • It receives water from surrounding terrain.

 

  • Its behaviour is influenced by slope, elevation, soils, land cover and rainfall.

 

  • It interacts with habitats, agriculture, communities and infrastructure downstream.

 

The same principle applies throughout the natural environment.

 

  • A woodland is simultaneously habitat, carbon stock, hydrological intervention, landscape feature and potentially an economic asset.

 

  • Agricultural land has a crop history, soil characteristics, runoff behaviour, biodiversity condition and alternative land-use potential.

 

Nature Equity Terrain Foundation Model establishes these relationships.

 

This creates a growing semantic layer above the underlying geospatial data — giving Nature Equity’s models and AI systems a common environmental

language through which they can reason across domains.

Rather than creating a separate data architecture for every environmental problem, Nature Equity develops specialist models from the same Terrain Foundation.

Hydrology & Natural Flood Management

Our hydrological modelling understands terrain as a connected water system.

High-resolution elevation, flow pathways, catchments, rivers, soils and land cover allow us to identify how water moves through landscapes and where Natural Flood Management interventions can create the greatest benefit.

This has evolved into our national Natural Flood Management v2.0 capability: moving from flood-risk mapping towards identifying, prioritising and valuing interventions.

Flood & water resilience

We combine terrain intelligence with flood hazard, surface-water pathways, infrastructure and receptors to understand both exposure and opportunities for mitigation.

03 - productivity

Biodiversity & BNG 

Our Habitat Foundation Model (HabFM) extends the Terrain Foundation into ecology.

  • Land use, land cover, priority habitats, woodland inventories, agricultural land-use history, soils, hydrology, designations and other evidence are combined through explicit precedence and classification rules.

  • This allows Nature Equity to create a pre-survey habitat and Biodiversity Net Gain baseline across large areas before expensive and time consuming field surveys begin.

  • Terrain, soils, vegetation, habitat and land management also provide the physical foundation for estimating carbon stocks, sequestration potential and the consequences of land-use change.

  • Crucially, carbon is not treated in isolation. It can be considered alongside water, biodiversity, agriculture and economic outcomes.

water quality

  • Hydrological connectivity provides the bridge between land management and water quality.

  • Understanding where water originates, how it moves through the landscape and which land uses it encounters creates the foundation for modelling sediment, nutrients and other pressures — and targeting nature-based interventions upstream.

Agriculture & crops

  • Multi-year crop and land-use evidence allows the Terrain Foundation Model to understand landscapes dynamically rather than as a single snapshot.

  • Crop rotations, persistent land uses and changing management provide additional evidence for habitat classification, runoff, soil condition, carbon and land-use opportunity.

How do you maintain national-scale environmental intelligence without losing the detail required to make decisions about individual places?

Our architecture divides the landscape into governed foundation regions and analytical units while retaining their relationships to catchments and neighbouring terrain.

Across England we are progressively integrating:

high-resolution LiDAR terrain data, hydrological catchments and river networks, soils, habitats, land cover,

agricultural land use, flood information, environmental designations, infrastructure and Earth observation data.

This means the same underlying environmental architecture can support analysis from:

national → region → river catchment → infrastructure corridor → development site → individual intervention.

For hydrology in particular, our Terrain Foundation processing works at metre-scale terrain resolution, rather than reducing the landscape to coarse national averages.

That distinction matters.

 

Nature-based solutions happen in real places, and detail matters.

This is also what differentiates Nature Equity from conventional environmental intelligence platforms. Too much environmental modelling stops at identifying the climate risk.

Most geospatial systems were designed primarily for humans to create and interrogate maps.

The Terrain Foundation Model is being designed increasingly for machines to understand landscapes. Its governed data architecture, derived environmental metrics and emerging semantic layer provide structured context that AI models can use to understand relationships between terrain, water, ecology, land management and economics.

This creates the foundation for a new generation of environmental AI.

Rather than asking AI:

  • What does this map show?

 

we want it ultimately to answer questions such as:

  • Where should we intervene in this catchment to reduce downstream flood risk

  • while increasing biodiversity and carbon value

  • without unnecessarily removing productive agricultural land?

That requires considerably more than a collection of maps.

  • It requires a model of how the landscape fits together.

the silver label

environmental data is rarely perfect 

Our experience in processing national and international data sets 

We have processed many, many terabytes of data to produce our Terrain Foundation Model. We developed our own automation Terrain Factory process that extracted, loaded and transformed and combined data sets and developed QA and MRM processes around the handling of the data.

 

At every stage there was a human in the loop to QA and validate both the process and the data outputs.

 

It taught us many things about data and caused a few headaches and lots of frustration. These are headaches and frustration you don't need to go through as we have done the heavy lifting for you, we have carried out the QA and verified the results.

 

We found solutions for holes in data, incomplete and inconsistent lidar tiles, edge effects between surveys, and what to do when your favourite satellite images are being obscured by clouds, also how to connect offshore islands to mainland data, how to deal with tidal transition zones,  and data that is now out of date as the landscape has moved on, the list goes on and on.

 

That is why it is important to understand the confidence level you can put into your data and this is why we are transparent on data confidence levels. 

It is also why we differentiate two main types of data label used in our models. They are the Silver Label Standard and the Gold Label Standard.

Nature Equity Silver Label™ — is a governed, model-derived interpretation produced from multiple authoritative and observational evidence sources using explicit rules, precedence, provenance and confidence, prior to field verification.

This is a layer above using raw satellite or aerial LiDAR that is available in national data sets. 

Then: 

Gold Label — a Silver Label subsequently validated or corrected through appropriate field observation or expert verification.

What this means though is that you do not  need to use gold standard everywhere. That would be hugely expensive and in many cases impossible or too time consuming to do for anything above a 100 ha. Our approach is to produce governed Silver Label data to do all baseline measurements and then only use ground truthing where it is required to enhance the data; for instance in checking on condition scores required for BNG calculations or to calibrate our simulation models.

What Silver label data gives you is high quality, scalable, governed pre-verification intelligence with known confidence levels.

 

We have also built this into a continuous improvement loop.

Acceleration in a world of slow progress 

As the white rabbit in Alice in Wonderland reminds us, we are late, very late, very, very late for a very important date.

Whether that was Net Zero by 2040 or 30% of land and marine ecosystems under nature restoration by 2030.

Nature Equity’s Terrain Foundation Model is built to close the gap between ambition and implementation.

 

By creating nature intelligence once, consistently and at national scale we can move faster from:

Nature does not need another target. It needs a faster route to delivery. We also think nature does not need another biodiversity metric - what it really needs is translating into money the costs, the liabilities, the assets, the value, the goodwill so we already have the apparatus to make financial decisions, and corporations and government do this every day,  but what we think is missing, within current decision making apparatus  is the visability of nature's value in those decisions. 

Nature Equity does not have to begin each project by rebuilding an environmental evidence base.

  • Every catchment processed, every habitat classification resolved, every hydrological relationship established

and every new dataset governed strengthens the underlying Terrain Foundation.

That produces an important cumulative advantage.

  • More territory → more governed data → more environmental relationships → better models → more applications → better decisions.

  • Our specialist application can change.

  • Our foundation remains.

Our Natural Flood Management product can use the same terrain and hydrological intelligence that informs water resilience.

  • Our Biodiversity Net Gain product can inherit hydrology rather than recreating it.

  • Carbon can inherit habitat, soils and land management.

  • Water-quality models can inherit catchment connectivity. Investment optimisation can draw upon all of them.

This makes development faster, outputs more consistent and the cost of creating each subsequent Nature Equity application progressively lower.
